A Conversation in the Language of Blue and Greene with Eli Yamin
Jazz and blues musician Eli Yamin presents reflections and activities echoing Maxine Greene’s legacy in his work as jazz and blues musician, educator and author.
Eli Yamin first came into contact with Maxine Greene’s work in 1999 at Lincoln Center Institute (now Lincoln Center Education), and her approach to aesthetic education soon became a driving force in his work as an educator. After altogether twenty years at Lincoln Center, including ten years as founding director of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Middle School Jazz Academy, and four years training artists for the Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad Program, Eli turned his full attention to the Jazz Power Initiative.
The Jazz Power Initiative (JPI), is an uptown based non-profit organization that offers over five hundred youth immersive jazz education experiences at no charge. In addition, JPI produces nearly twenty concerts a year, including Intergenerational Jazz Jam at National Jazz Museum in Harlem and Jazz Power Institute at Lehman College.
Eli continues to teach youth, artists, educators and executives, and is working towards his doctorate in jazz piano at Stony Brook University (SUNY). He is the author of So You Want to Sing the Blues: A Guide for Performers published by Rowman and Littlefield in collaboration with the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

At this gathering, sponsored by Maxine Greene Institute, on December 15th at The New School, we will be also celebrating Maxine's 102nd birthday! She was born in Brooklyn on December 23rd in 1917.
We all know how much she cared for the arts and their value in educational settings. She would have loved to share this occasion with us- to participate in making music, listening, conversing, celebrating the moment and greeting new and old friends.
